Description

In the pre-dawn hours of 13 June 2025, an Israeli precision airstrike struck Block 4 of the Orchideh residential apartment complex on Sattarkhan Street in western Tehran, as part of the broader Operation Rising Lion assault on over 100 targets across Iran. The strike hit the middle of the building, causing the complete collapse of floors 3 through 5 of the 10-unit residential block. According to an eyewitness account reported by Saed News, a friend of the Abbasi family who arrived at the scene the following morning was confronted with the total destruction of the building. She confirmed the presence of a blood-soaked bed among the rubble. Neighbors reported 10 to 12 people killed. The families living in the destroyed floors appear to have all died. Among those killed as a direct consequence of this targeting decision were four entirely civilian members of the Abbasi family: Parnia Abbasi (23), a poet, English language teacher and recently appointed bank employee who was days away from her 24th birthday; her father Parviz Abbasi, a retired Education Ministry teacher; her mother Masoumeh Shahriari, a retired Bank Melli employee; and her 16-year-old brother Parham Abbasi, a school student born in 1388 (2009). They were asleep when the building was hit. Separately, IRIB state television reported that three six-story buildings in the Sattarkhan area were struck by Israeli fighter jets that morning, and Eghtesad Online confirmed the Orchideh complex among the residential targets. No prior warning was issued. The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) condemned the wave of residential strikes. PEN Germany and PEN Sydney both issued public statements specifically mourning Parnia Abbasi, and Zahra Rahnavard — under house arrest since 2011 — attended a public tribute to her. The IDF refused to comment on Parnia Abbasi's death when approached by the Washington Post.
