Strike near Falak-ol-Aflak Castle, Khorramabad

According to Iranian cultural heritage authorities and Iranian media reports, approximately 15 missiles struck the area around Falak-ol-Aflak Castle in Khorramabad on March 8, 2026. The strike affected the protected area and perimeter of the historic castle complex, causing damage across multiple components of the site.

The reported damage included the Archaeological Museum and the Anthropology Museum within the castle complex, while the headquarters of the Lorestan Provincial Cultural Heritage Department was heavily damaged. Additional reported damage affected several historic buildings surrounding the castle, including former military and administrative structures associated with the complex.

Engineering assessments cited in the reports documented deep cracks and structural fissures in parts of the castle, raising concerns about the long-term stability of the historic masonry. Iranian heritage authorities also reported damage within the castle’s protected archaeological area and buffer zone.

Falak-ol-Aflak Castle is a nationally registered cultural heritage site and a major archaeological and museum complex. The reports state that the complex had been marked with the Blue Shield emblem, the distinctive protective emblem used for cultural property under the framework of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.
