Description

At approximately 05:30 on the morning of Friday 3 April 2026 (14 Farvardin 1405), a drone strike directly hit the emergency relief warehouse of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) in the Choghadak district of Bushehr Province in southern Iran. The IRCS confirmed the strike in an official statement and through an on-camera statement by Ehsan Izadpanah, Director General of the Bushehr branch of the IRCS, who described the attack as having taken place in the "early hours" of that morning. In the strike, the following items were completely destroyed: two wheeled relief containers belonging to the IRCS; one emergency response bus; and one emergency vehicle. The IRCS official statement, as published on the organisation's information portal and relayed by Jamejamonline, stated explicitly that the targeted facility "was used solely for humanitarian purposes including storage of relief supplies and support for disaster victims, and had no military function whatsoever." The statement further confirmed that the attack "caused significant damage to the infrastructure, equipment, and operational capacity of the Red Crescent" and "severely impacted its ability to respond to the urgent needs of those affected." The IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) confirmed the strike through a spokesperson quoted by Reuters. The IFRC noted it was operating as the only humanitarian organisation with a nationwide presence across Iran, with approximately 100,000 responders deployed. The federation confirmed that by the date of this attack, three of its staff members had already been killed in hostilities since the US-Israeli military campaign began on 28 February 2026. The IRCS official statement and multiple Iranian outlets cited the Geneva Conventions and customary international humanitarian law, which explicitly prohibit targeting humanitarian organisations, their facilities, equipment, and personnel. The Red Crescent emblem is a protected symbol under the 1949 Geneva Conventions. No casualties were reported among IRCS personnel at the time of the strike, attributed in part to the early morning timing. The Iranian Red Crescent Society released video footage showing the aftermath of the attack. Al Jazeera also published this footage, independently verifying the destruction of the aid containers and emergency vehicles. The Iranian Red Crescent's head, Pir-Hossein Kolivand, reported in a consolidated damage briefing the following day (15 Farvardin) that airstrikes across Bushehr and five other provinces had caused serious damage on the same day, confirming the Choghadak warehouse attack as part of a broader pattern of strikes on southern Iran that day.
