Description

On 27 March 2026, at approximately 4 am local time, a 5-storey residential building near Enayati Street in the Sizdah Aban neighborhood in Ray, was struck by an air to ground missile.1 The extent of impact was such that numerous residential buildings and homes in a radius of approximately 150 meters from the targeted area were severely damaged or destroyed. Footage captured by first responders from the Iranian Red Crescent Society show the extent of the destruction.1 2 Relief efforts that took place in spite of thunderous downpour, continued for up to 48 hours during which fatalities and other injured civilians were retrieved or rescued from the rubble.

Given the timing of the attack, occurring in the early hours of Friday (ordinarily considered as part of the "weekend" in Iran), many people may have been asleep when the airstrike took place.3 4 Initially, as joint efforts by emergency teams were underway to retrieve survivors, it had been reported that seven people had been trapped beneath the rubble.5 One video clip displays efforts by firefighters working under heavy downpour and before sunrise to rescue a young boy, named Abolfazl, whose lower body was reportedly trapped under rubble for up to four hours. He was eventually rescued from the rubble at approximately 08.30, Friday morning.6 Later in the day, it was reported that the number of fatalities of this attack had risen to 10 civilians.7 However, in footage and images reported of the funeral procession that was held four days later, on Tuesday 31 March, a total of 13 people were identified as having been killed in the strike on the Sizdah Aban neighborhood.8 Among those killed in the attack were four members of the Mehrabi family that included two young children.8 Six other individuals killed were identified to have been members of the large Afghan community residing in this neighborhood.9 10

Ray (or "Shahr-e Ray"), which is located in the south of the capital, Tehran, is one of the oldest existing cities in Tehran province. The targeted area which described as "entirely residential" is not a known military zone, and all those killed are reported to have been ordinary civilians.11 1
