Mohammad Hossein Azizi: The Doctor Whose Patients Will Wait Forever

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 15, Dr. Mohammad Hossein Azizi was speaking on the phone near Tehran’s Tajrish Square when an explosion occurred. His colleague on the other end tried repeatedly to reach him but received no answer. The following day, his body was found about 500 meters from the blast site, and two days later, he was officially identified.

A quick online search reveals Dr. Azizi’s extensive contributions to medical research. He described himself on his ResearchGate profile as an otolaryngologist with interests in medical history, and medical journalism.

“He was unjustly martyred, and unjustly discovered,” said Dr. Ebrahim Razmpa, a close friend and experienced otolaryngologist. “Dr. Azizi hailed from Fasa in Fars Province. He completed his general medical education at Shiraz University and his specialization at Iran University of Medical Sciences. He was married with a daughter, a veterinarian living in Canada, who has been unable to travel to Tehran due to the current circumstances. Neither people from outside Iran nor from other provinces can visit Tehran.”

We found his daughter’s LinkedIn profile. She had posted about her father’s death:

“People in other parts of the world can never truly understand what we’re going through in the Middle East. My father was a doctor—a kind, civilian man with no connection to politics or violence. He went out for a simple walk and never came back. His life was stolen by the war between Israel and Iran.

This world is deeply unfair. While we live through sirens, smoke, and sudden loss, others continue their lives in peace—unaware, untouched, and unmoved. They don’t carry this weight. They don’t feel this fear. They’ll never understand what it means to lose everything in a heartbeat because of a war you never chose.”

Dr. Razmpa grew emotional as he spoke of his friend: “He was one of the most prominent figures in otolaryngology, also a historian and journalist with numerous publications. He served as a faculty member of the Academy of Medical Sciences and edited its journal, as well as the Journal of the Otolaryngology Association. He had a private practice in Tehran and worked at Milad Hospital. He was an honorable man, a writer, and a literary figure. I have practiced medicine for over 45 years, and I can say he was the most complete person I have known in terms of ethics, knowledge, and culture. His loss is a great loss to the medical community.” Mohammad Hossein Azizi was born on March 15, 1955, in Fasa, Fars Province. He died on June 15, 2025, in Tehran and was buried on June 21, 2025, in Behesht Zahra Cemetery.
